What Happens When Cat Litter Creates Dust?
Pour fresh litter into a tray and you may see a cloud rise into the air. Smaller clouds can appear when your cat digs and covers its waste, or when you scoop the box. Your cat’s face is close to the litter during use, so the amount of dust it produces is worth considering.
Many conventional clumping litters are made from bentonite clay. Some clay products release noticeable mineral dust. What does that mean for cats and the people who care for them?
Why bentonite litter can become dusty
Bentonite consists mainly of very fine clay minerals. Loose particles and fragments of litter granules can become airborne when the litter is disturbed. Dust levels vary between products.

How can litter dust affect cats?
Dust near the face can irritate a cat’s nose and airways, particularly if the cat already has a respiratory condition. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center lists dusty kitty litter among suspected feline asthma triggers and recommends reducing exposure to irritating litter.
A lower dust litter may be a sensible choice for a cat that coughs, wheezes or seems uncomfortable around its box. Persistent symptoms warrant a veterinary check because they can have several causes. What about people in the home?
Pouring a bag or scooping a tray may briefly put dust into the air close to your face. Bentonite dust can cause coughing and eye irritation. The ILO/WHO International Chemical Safety Card for bentonite identifies both effects and advises against inhaling the dust. A visibly dusty litter may be especially uncomfortable for someone with sensitive airways.
Some bentonite deposits also contain quartz, a form of crystalline silica; the amount varies. Heavy, repeated exposure to respirable crystalline silica is a well established workplace lung hazard. The World Health Organization’s review of bentonite and related clays explains the distinction between that hazard and the more limited evidence about bentonite clay itself.
Exposure matters. Evidence from heavily exposed workers does not show that ordinary household use of bentonite litter causes silicosis or lung cancer. A 2025 assessment of typical consumer use estimated much lower silica exposure and did not expect a significant risk of non-cancer respiratory illness under its usual household scenario. Its authors noted uncertainty for homes with many cats and called for updated dust measurements. The findings were published as a conference abstract, so the estimates remain provisional.
A published case report has described serious lung disease in a person with unusually prolonged exposure to bentonite litter in a home with multiple cats. Such a case merits further research.
